S.T.O.P Grant
The Union County S.T.O.P. initiative (Sober Truth On Preventing Underage Drinking) was made possible by a federally funded grant implemented by the Surgeon General’s call to action after the S.T.O.P. Bill was passed. The S.T.O.P. initiative helps the Union County Coalition focus on environmental strategies to prevent underage drinking. These environmental efforts include media campaigns, newsletters, and town hall meetings. These environmental efforts are all implemented with the goal of changing social norms regarding underage drinking. While the S.T.O.P. Initiative focuses on working with youth in an effort to curb underage drinking, parents also play a large part in the effort. Currently, many towns hold parents liable for actions that take place in their homes. Our “Parents Who Host Lose The Most” brochure outlines the consequences of allowing underage drinking to take place in your home.

According to the 2008 Union County Coalition’s Countywide Survey, 58% of middle and high school students in Union County admit to drinking alcohol at least once. Also, the average age of a child’s first drink in New Jersey is an astonishing 11.3 years old. The S.T.O.P. Initiative and the Union County Coalition look to curb this risky behavior among our children.
